| Answer» A major step was taken in 1992 by providing constitutional status to the Panchayati Raj\xa0Institutions through the 73rd\xa0Amendment Act of the Constitution of India. Such a step was taken with the aim of making democracy strong and effective by giving power to the grass root units of self government. It is decentralising power to the lower levels.The importance of local self government can be understood through the following points:1.
