Find the equation of the line passing through (1,2) and parallel to the line y = 3x – 1

Answer»

The given is

Y = 3x – 1 ⇒     3x – y – 1 = 0    …(1)

∴ Any line parallel to (1) is written as

3x – y + γ = 0     …(2)

Since the line passes through (1, 2),

3(1) – 1 + γ = 0

⇒ γ = – 1

∴ The line is 3x – y – 1 = 0, which is itself.
