By the early 15th century, woodblocks were being widely used in Europe to print textiles, playing cards and religious pictures with simple and brief texts. The knowledge of woodblock printing in Europe came with Marco Polo.Paper made possible the production of manuscripts carefully written by scribes. Paper reached Europe through the Silk Route in the 11th century. China already had the technology of woodblock printing. In 1295, Marco Polo, a great explorer, returned to Italy after many years of exploration in China. He brought the woodblock printing technology and knowledge back with him. Italy began producing with woodblocks, and soon the technology spread to other parts of Europe. Luxury editions were still handwritten on very expensive vellum, which is meant for rich monastic libraries which scoffed at printed books as cheap vulgarities. |
