How does the tendency of the elements to lose electrons change in the Modern Periodic Table in (i) a group, (ii) a period and why? |
|
Answer» Solution :(i) The tendency to lose electrons INCREASES down a group since the ATOMIC size increases and electrons EXPERIENCE less attraction towards the nucleus. (ii) The tendency to lose electrons decreases along a period since the electrons are FILLED in the same shell i.e., valence shell. Their attraction towards the nucleus increases DUE to decrease in atomic size. |
