Howis bleaching powder prepared ? Why does bleaching powder (i) Smell strongly of chlorine ? (ii) not dissolve completely in water ? |
|
Answer» Solution :Bleaching powder is prepared by the action of `Cl_(2)` on DRY SLAKED lime . `Ca(OH)_2 + Cl_2 rarr CaOCl_2+H_2O` Bleaching powder SMELLS strongly of chlorine because it is loosely bound to slaked lime. Carbon dioxide present in the air combines with bleaching powder leberating chlorine. `CaOCl_(2) + CO_2 rarr CaCO_2 + Cl_2 uarr` Bleaching powder reacts with water as under : `CaOCl_(2) + CO_2 rarr Ca(OH)_2 + Cl_2` `Ca(OH)_2 + underset("(Form air)")(CO_2) rarr underset("CARBONATE")underset("Calcium")(CaCO_3 + H_2O)` |
