Metallic and Non-metallic properties |
|
Answer» Solution :(i) Metals show tendency to lose ELECTRONS. THEREFORE,they are said to be electropositive. (ii) Non-metals show the tendency to accept electronsor share electrons with another atoms. Therefore, they are said to be electronegative. (iii) Across the period from left to right, metalliccharacter decreases and non-metallic characterincreases. (iv)This is because the ATOMIC size decreases due TOGREATER nuclear pull because of which valenceelectrons cannot be easily removed. (v) Down the group-metallic character increasesand non-metallic character decreases from top tobottom in a group. (vi)As atomic number increases from top to bottomin a group, newer shells get added which intum increases its atomic size. Thus nuclear pulldecreases due to addition of newer shells andthus the valence electrons present in outermostshell can be easily removed from the atom. (vii) The THREE types of elements can be easily shownin the Modern Periodic table with the help of zig- zag line. (viii) The metalloid elements lie along the border ofthe zig-zag line. All the metals lie on the left sideof zig-zag line w~le all the non-metals lie on theright side. |
