Name the functional group of organic compounds that can be hydrogenated .With the help of a suitable example explain the process of hydrogenation , mentioning the conditions of the reaction and any one change in physical property with the formation of the product. Name any one natural source of organic compounds that are hydrogenated |
Answer» Solution :The functional group which can be easily hydrogenated is . BOND. The family is known as alkenes. The hydrogenation reaction can be carried by heating a member of the family (e.g. ethane) with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst like NICKEL (Ni) for EXAMPLE. `underset("Ethene")(CH_(2)=CH_(2))+H_(2)(g)underset(573K)overset(Ni)tounderset("Ethane")(CH_(3)-CH_(3))` Ethene is an unsaturated HYDROCARBON while ethane is of saturted nature. Edible oils such as coconut oil, peanut oil etc. contain atleast one bond in their molecules. These are regarded as unsaturated compounds. Upon hydrogenation, these get converted into fats which no longer contain any bond.
