Question : In the given figure , the arrows depict the movement of water in the tree.(a)What do the arrows A, B and C represent ?(b)What kind of movement is A and what is C ?(c)Explain the three forces responsible for uptake of water .

Answer»

Solution :(a) A represents Root Pressure.
B represents Cohesion-Adhesion force.
C represents Transpirational PULL.
(b)A ispush while C is pull.
(c) In plants, water and minerals and transported through xylem. The xylem vessels and tracheids are interconnected throughoutroots, stem and leaves to FORM continuouswater conducting channels. There are THREE factors / forces that help in transportaition:
(i)Root Pressure : The root hair, in CONTACT with soil, take up water and minerals. This creates a concentration gradient inside the rootand outside. Thus move water moves in, creating pressure inside the rootsknown as root pressure. This induces steady movementof water into root xylem .
(ii)Transpirational Pull :The leaves, on top, are continuously losing water, DUE to transpiration. This process results in upward pull of water and minerals, from roots to leaves, due to suction pull. Thus transpiration is a mojorforce during the day.
(iii)Cohesion - Adhesion force : Strong of attraction between two water molecules (cohesion) and betweenwater and xylem (adesion) result in a continuouscolumn of water which is pushed inwards due to root pressure and upward due to transpiration pull.
