Question : What are chromosomes ? Explain how in sexually reproducing organisms the number of chromosomes in the progeny is maintained.

Answer»

Solution :Chromosomes are carriers of GENETIC information which is inherited from generation to generation. Number of chromosomes in sexually REPRODUCING organisms is maintained. This has been achieved by having special lineages of cells in specialised organs which have only half the number of chromosomes and thus half the amount of DNA. Thus, when these germ-cells from TWO individuals combine during SEXUAL reproduction to form a new individual, it results in re-establishment of the number of chromosomes and DNA CONTENT in the new generation.
