Solve : 9800 GTX is failing while gaming?

Answer»

I'm posting here because I think it's a driver issue. Hopefully not hardware... If you think it's better somewhere else please put it there. Thanks.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
Card: EVGA Nvidia 9800 GTX
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600
Memory: 4 Gigs 1066 GSkill

About 2 days ago my computer STARTED freezing while playing BC2 multiplayer. It seems to be getting worse too and nothing I have done is helping and I'm out of ideas. Yesterday I played BC2 single player through the entire campaign and had no problems. I've been working on it pretty hard TODAY so I'll relate everything that's been going on today. I played COD 5 this morning and within 15 min the comp froze and had to hard boot it. I just GOT done testing with COD 4 and it froze during that multiplayer as well. I can't alt tab or bring up task manager. I see no errors in event viewer and my GPU temp is always right around 64 C when it happens.

I rolled back the driver within Device Manager and when I did that the computer stopped freezing but not the game. When playing with the rollback the game would crap out and windows would give me the error "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver Nvidia windows kernel mode driver, version 257.21 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." I would have to kill the game process and start it again only to go through the same problem over and over. So... I completely uninstalled the driver and downloaded the latest from Nvidia and INSTALLED it. Now the computer is still locking up during game play and it's actually happening even faster now. I only get in a multiplayer match for about 30 seconds sometimes less when the comp freezes.

Is there anything else I should be trying here? Thanks in advance!

Update:
I just played BC2 again for a min and it worked fine. I also ran 3d Mark 2010 and it never messed up. I got a score of P7914. I don't get why this only happens on multiplayer servers. Try running a stress test such as Furmark or OCCT GPU test, see if that causes crashes.
It unfortunately sounds like a hardware issue to me rather than driver related, if you've already uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.
It's odd that it only happens in multiplayer though ...
