Answer» I have a Dell 4300 (2002) with std equipment 1.70 GHz, 256MB, Windows XP, DVD-RW drive. My problem is the A drive isn't working anymore. I get the following error MSG anytime I try to use it.
A: is not accessible the floppy disk controller reported an error that is not recognized by the floppy disk driver.
I contacted Dell and they gave me a ten step troubleshooting process that didn't work. I'm thinking that maybe I just need a new drive?
Thanks for any help you can GIVE me. [smiley=kiss.gif]Were you monkeying inside the case PRIOR to this at all? If not, then open it and reseat the power and data cable on the floppy and the floppy connector on the motherboard (the other end of the small data cable).
Is the floppy seen in the BIOS? If so, then the floppy is probably history. Has it had a lot of use? A replacement seems like a good plan if the above doesn't work.
You could also try deleting the floppy drive from Device Manager and rebooting. Sometimes you get lucky. Thanks for all of the advice. The drive was listed in my BIOS and none of the steps worked. A had added a new DVD-RW drive about a MONTH before this stopped working.
Oh well, looks like I'll be buying a new drive.
Thanks again for your help.No problem. I hope that fixes you up. LET us know. I wanted to let you know that I bought a new drive, installed it and it's working fine now. Thanks again for your assistance. This is where I'll come first for help from now on! Thanks for posting back. And we'll leave the light on.
