Did this occur following a failed upgrade to windows 7 attempt? I have a sneaking suspicion there’s more to this story and the missing details are giong to be a major factor to it's successful resolution. If you would like to pursue this with us please supply the HARDWARE specs and the rest of the tale

Windows 7 has much more demanding hardware requirements than XP and the failure modes description falls within what one would expect if the hardware failed the minimum performance specs.

Below is the Microsoft help link RELATED to my suspicion, also Ubuntu's 32 bit download and Suse 11.3 32 bit download....
There both good solid ALTERNATIVE systems, both with about the same learning curve, a slightly different interface, their both full GUI and friendly. excellent documentation in both.....

You have a few decisions to MAKE, if your going to dual boot Windows first be sure to defrag before
installing the Linux distro of your choice, try the live CD's first, they will be slow off of the CD but when
installed will perform well, Good Luck
