Solve : another hair-pulling driver(?) issue?

Answer»

Hello! Name is rob (obviously).

So im going to keep this to a nutshell.

I got this really old and *censored* laptop from my buddy, doesn't even have a battery. I took it because i have hit a gigantic speed bump of life. Now the problem i am having with it:

It is a Toshiba satellite a110 with no working sound. According to the system, there are no audio devices installed. Ive gone through tons of drivers trying to fix this issue (figuring the problem existed previously, i re-formatted it. fresh install.). I know for a fact that it is realtek (I have so many driver issues with this company in the past) but i have tried all that i can think of by them. Ive had a few blue screens trying. Whats confusing me more is there is an unknown device stated "Modem device on high definition audio bus". Figuring this is the audio not wanting to work thats what i have been installing the drivers on (since there are no other devices with problems). Before you ask, yes, i used Toshibas drivers. they all worked (wifi, video), but not the audio. Im starting to worry this is a hardware issue. But since i have no information on how the problem occurred or started, I have no idea if there were any warning signs HINTING to either HW or SW.

After removing the panels on the bottom searching for a chip with a serial i found "rtl81000cl" on a realek chip. Google lead me to some Spanish site with "realtek audio drivers" ('97 or something, it installed multiple drivers on the computer with the same name). With those failing as well im completely tired and drained. its past 5 am. I just want sound...

Windows xp sp3

i would really love some ideas.

And if it is a HW issue, Any stores offer usb Audio adapters? :{ Quote from: simplyrobbie on May 19, 2011, 03:17:38 AM

That is an internal 56k (dialup) modem.
thats even worse news. the fact that it cant even detect any audio hardware at all leads me to believe that its not a driver issue...I presume you are using Windows? I guess you already looked in Device Manager for any device that has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. This will at least tell you if XP recognized the device, but just couldn't find the driver. You may have to install the chipset driver (have you done this?) before Windows will recognize the audio hardware, so don't give up yet.

HOWEVER, this is around $25

Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Amigo II USB Sound Card & Headset Adapter

i belive the chipset drivers have already been installed (ATI SMBus). Just updated the bios, going to try to re-install the chipset drivers.

(p.s. i asked stored with usb adapter because i cannot play online) Quote from: simplyrobbie on May 19, 2011, 01:49:17 PM

Well, considering I don't even know what country, and what location in that country, you live in, (I am in England) I can't really help you with a store. Have you heard of Google? Or CIRCUIT City if (as I suspect, I wonder why?) you are an American? They have plenty of USB sound cards from $12.99 online price. Maybe you can use Google to find their store locator page and a telephone? (to call your local store.) (and ask them) They have the Sabrent USB-SBCV USB sound card for $12.99 online price.

canada, ontario. google gave me only online retailers. although im pretty sure my turtle beach headsets run on the computer solely through the usb. problem is my friend has it, will have to get it back some how.

Also ati no longer supports the chipset drivers (i assume since i cant find anything that supports my hardware on their website)
