Solve : Can I use the OS for the old comp on the new comp without the CD's?? |
|
Answer» I am trying to up grade my Mom's comp but we don't have the disks for the OS any more. I want to get her a new hard drive and put this OS on it, can I? Right now she has XP. I am not new to using computers but I haven't done that much with the set up of new ones or the assembly so I'm at the learning stage. Any info anyone has on this would be helpful. Also any info about using and setting up brand new hard drives that I might not KNOW would be appreciated. Quote I want to get her a new hard drive and put this OS on it, can I?Not without CD and product key. Please read: How to replace the motherboard on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 This article is from Microsoft. If you are *just* replacing the hard drive, and the rest of the PC is the same, you can clone the OLD drive onto the new one using a program like Symantec Ghost. Often this program or one like it is given away with new hard drives.Make sure you have the reg key after cloning the hard drive. Microsoft will detect a HARDWARE change and ask you to re-register windows. Quote from: jwko on October 27, 2009, 11:06:44 PM Make sure you have the reg key after cloning the hard drive. Microsoft will detect a hardware change and ask you to re-register windows. No, It won't. At least three major components (motherboard, video card, expansion cards) NEED to be CHANGED. And it's called Activation, not "registering". |
