Solve : Can't Connect OE with new Internet Access?

Answer»

When I changed my ISP from Verizon to Comcast, I had to reconnect my Outlook.  But whenever I try to open it, I get the error message: "Invalid command; Server Error: 0x800CCC90; Error Number: 0x800CCC18."  I check with instructions on both Comcast & Microsoft sites.  Everything I had done was correct.  I call Comcast Tech Support.  They CHECKED my connections & found everything in order.  They recommend I contact Microsoft & ask if they have blocked Comcast.  But I can't get an answer from Microsoft on anything unless I pay $59.  Where else can I get an answer to this problem? What are the POP3 and SMTP settings you were given by your ISP ? ?
Perhaps they are entered wrong...In your account settings make sure "Log on using secure password authentication" is not checked. QUOTE from: cruisin702 on January 06, 2010, 01:48:48 AM

While your recommendation may apply to the majority of email accounts, it's possible this would be an incorrect setting for him.  He really needs to get the proper settings from his ISP.  Quote from: soybean on January 07, 2010, 08:31:10 AM

Read here to make sure your settings are correct. Pay close ATTENTION to all the check boxes to make sure they are checked/unchecked appropriately. If all of this is correct they may have your chosen password setup incorrectly. Quote from: cruisin702 on January 08, 2010, 10:49:03 PM

That's what I was getting at back in post #3.  I don't know what the point of your post #4 was.  Quote from: Balatro on January 05, 2010, 06:16:27 PM

So, they checked your "connections", but what about your email account settings?  Just because you can connect to the Internet does not mean your email is going to work.  You must your email account settings properly configured in your email client, be that Outlook or whatever.

cruisin702 gave you the link to what you need, assuming you are using Outlook Express, not Outlook.  Outlook Express and Outlook are not the same thing. Quote from: soybean on January 09, 2010, 09:01:59 AM

The point of post #4 is the user is using Comcast and my post number 2 reflects the setting for Comcast.

I assume OE is an abbreviation for Outlook Express Quote from: cruisin702 on January 11, 2010, 03:10:36 AM

Yes, but I found it odd that you only mentioned that one element of settings and posted no link to a reference at that point in this discussion thread.  So, it seemed like you were just throwing out some statement there that was just based on your experience working some other email account, perhaps a non-Comcast account.

Well, "OE" is used in the topic title, but then in his first post, he says "Outlook".  Since I've often encountered forum discussions where the OP says one thing but MEANS the other, I think all references to the email client must be precise.  If it's OE, then say OE, or Outlook Express, don't just say Outlook when you mean Outlook Express; this leads to mis-communication.  Quote from: cruisin702 on January 06, 2010, 01:48:48 AM

That worked!!!  Thanks!

Funny that both Microsoft & Comcast told me to do the opposite. You're welcome, glad you got it working. Quote from: Balatro on January 11, 2010, 10:34:46 PM

Shame on Comcast tech support.  If that's what they told you by telephone, they even contradicted their own instructions at Verifying Outlook Express settings
