Solve : Can't get into bios!!? |
|
Answer» I have an old Dell Lattitude DPi D266XT laptop. I am trying to upgrade the HARD drive and install new memory. I am trying to save the data from the old drive to an Apricorn hard drive ezzzzy upgrade kit. The kit comes with a CD that you must put in your computer and boot from at startup. The problem I am having is that when I try to enter the bios by hitting F1 (BIOS revision AO3) to boot from CD rom drive I can not get into the bios. I have hit from F1-F12 and nothing will get me in. If I hit escape it brings me to a screen that has a C> prompt. Any idea what I might try next??? As always, thank you in advance for your help!! What happens when you try and get in? Nothing? Have you tried pressing the Delete key?Calum, I have tried the delete key and it takes me to the same screen when I push escape. It is not a C:> prompt it just shows alot of C:>'s and then Windows starts up.I should to me like your hitting the Key to late. on most Dell's you have to Press F2 for Bios , so i recommend you mash the f2 button lots of times as soon as you hit the power button. on your lap top the the screen warm up fast enough for you to SEE the Dell splash screen that comes on as soon as you boot? That's very strange. If I'm unsure about which key to press, I keep pressing F1-F12 and Delete until the BIOS comes up. If you've tried all of that and it doesn't work, I don't know what to say. Have you just tried booting from the CD in case it's already set higher than the HDD in the boot order? Just a thought, it might save you having to enter the BIOS. Edit: Also, what panboy said above. Lol.Calum & panboy, Thank you both for the help! OK I tried F2 and I'm pounding it continuosly as it POWERS up and as the screen comes up(and yes, I see that misserable DELL splash!!) and as it is running thru certain checks. I have tried booting the CD with no luck. Here is exacty what comes up: A quick flash that says something like this is property of Dell Computers........ then I get this: Crystalware Audio Initilization Action Utility Version 272 Configured for Plug n Play Plug n Play bios detected WINDOWS\Ipconfig/Release_all This program can not be running in DOS mode C:\> C:\>Rem[Header] C:\> C:\>Rem[CD-Rom Drive] c:\> C:\> Rem[Miscellaneous] C:\> C:\> C:\> - that's the cursor to the left, but I can't TYPE anything when it's blinking. Then after a 15 second wait it starts up Windows. This happens no matter which buttons I push F1-F12 and delete. Since you do get to see the splash screen it should say what key you have to press to enter set up, it might be that you have to push 2 keys at once. it will either say it at the top left of the Screen or right in the middle at the bottom. once you find out what Key to push you'll be half way there ^.^ What version of windows are you running there , the Boot pattern seems kinda weird http://docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pmojav/specs.htm U have your self quite an old Lappy there , you Need to push the key and the F1 key to enter set up The magick of GOOGLE told mePanboy, You smarter than the average bear!!!
