Solve : Can't get sound to work on 2nd hand computer?

Answer»

I got a computer from a recycle network. I was able to reformat the hard drive and install XP. Everything seems to be working fine except the sound. I plugged in the speakers but get no sound. When i go to hardware device manager, it lists a "multimedia audio controller" under "other devices with a yellow question mark next to it. It says it is enabled but that the DRIVERS are not installed and gives Code 28. I tried the  the "reinstall driver" option but it can't find the driver. And I don't have any of the software that came with the computer so I can't reinstall.  I also tried the troubleshooting feature but that didn't help.

In the hardware device manager list under sound, video and game CONTROLLERS these are the things listed:
audio codecs
legacy audio drivers
legacy video capture devices
media control devices
video codecs
When I click on each of these, each say they are working properly.

The computer is a shuttle brand computer and the PREVIOUS owner upgraded the video card to an xfxforce. Is there a way to know if he also upgraded the sound card and that's why it is not working? I tried plugging the speakers to the built-in speaker outlet but nothing happens. I also noticed that the monitor (an ADVUEU which I can't find a website for- much less a driver) has speakers and a speaker outlet built into the monitor monitor itself. I tried plugging into there but that's not working for me either.

What can I do? Appreciate any ideas.Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under the line Debug - PCI Driver DLoad Page.

You want the audio SiS drivers. You should be able to download the sound driver you need HEREThank you very much - it is now working!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, I tried to watch an episode of LOST on this computer the other from the network's website (think it's ABC). Anyway, it won't play. Do you think it might be because I only have 512 memory? Any ideas?
Thanks againMore likely it's a slow internet connection but i would add more RAM anyways...it's dirt cheap right now...
If you travel to Crucial .com they have an online scanner that will tell you exactly what type and how much it will take. Quote from: LAR on March 05, 2009, 04:10:05 PM

See above how an Everest Report can easily be copied and PASTED into a Post requesting Help...Most video sites use a Flash based player. You need to install the latest version of the plug-in for you browser. You can do so at this link:

Elviros, please don't make "what he said" type posts. They don't add anything.
