Well there is a SURPRISE, a problem with vista drivers. I am asking here because the CANON website says that my camera should be vista compatable with a driver release - yet whilst they DIRECT me to a vista downloads page, there appears to be patches for all their programs, but no camera driver. Does anyone know if this is a driver they have yet to make or have I missed something?

thank you for your timeI see a lot of Vista drivers----->HereI have tried these and unless there is a specific one I am understanding wrong;
the upper 2 are drivers, but not for vista
the next 2 are codecs - already tried the latest of these and no change.
The rest are patchs/upgrades for the software that comes with the camera - I have updated the software that deals with interaction with the camera as well, but to no effect (EOS UTILITY Updater for Windows (2.2.1))

The camera is working today and happily talking to the computer - even though I have installed no other software. It seems that restarting after the install is not enough - a proper shut down was needed - strange as I thought there was no difference.
Anyway thank you both for your assistance I'm glad to hear, it was a simple solution
