Solve : Cant play the downloaded video file ( unknown format )??

Answer»

I have downloaded a .avi video file.
I cant  play the video file using many of the media players ( The KMPlayer, K-lite codec , windows media , vlc )

The file extension is changed to .001 for the first file and .002 for the sencond

file....etc instead of .avi as mention in the website.

Thank for your consideration.Exactly how many FILES are there?

Use HJSplit to join the files:
http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/Thank you, I will give it a tryThe file names sound like a winRAR file. Do you have winrar installed in your machine?

No,it is not a  winrar file.
I have got the solution.
The file that I have downloaded has copy rights. I am not aware of this before.
I think this might be the reason for not able to play it.

Anyway, thank you for your consideration.
it's a spanned ZIP archive, or as Carbon suggested a split AVI file.

how would "copyrights" ISSUES cause "unknown format" messages? Generally "unknown format" means- "unknown format".

a spanned ZIP  archive can be opened with a number of ZIP programs, and it's contents extracted.

However- since this is a spanned set my first question would be to inquire as to the legitimacy of your quest....001, .002 files are split up files. So use a program that can join it together, usually I use HJSplit but other programs like winzip or 7 zip can work as per this website ihere: http://www.binaries4all.com/001/

So join them together and you get one standard file, if you can't play the joined file, then something's wrong with it.There is a software called Video Redo
It seems to read lots of TYPES of video.
Hope this helps.I will try video redo and get back to you.

Thank you.I highly doubt it will work, as .001, .002 ect are not media formats. They are split-formats.

Any reason why you aren't trying HJSplit? Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 29, 2009, 01:31:06 AM

Like I said before, I have USED .001, .002 etc. I have joined them with HJsplit, and then  I have received perfect video files. Why are you not trying this way which I have myself tested to work on files with same extension as the ones you have? Sure, I will try HJSplit tomorrow. How many files do you have? Are they all about the same size? Are they NAMED something like....

*.rar
*.r01
*.r02
*.r03

or

*.rar
*.001
*.002
*.003

ALWAYS extract the first file. This doesn't not necessarily mean r01. If there is a *.rar file, that's the one you must extract. Otherwise, go for the r01, or 001.

Most of games and movies are packed this way so that if one RAR archive is corrupt, it can be replaced on its own without having to replace the whole lot.

Once extracted, you will often get an image, especially if you have downloaded a DVD Movie or game. Other times you may get a *.avi file, which you can play in most standard media players on your computer.

Be sure to use WinRAR to to all extracting. Trust me. If WinRAR can't extract it, then there's something wrong with the archives.
I cant extract the downloaded files.

The extension is like
*.001
*.002
*.003

......etc

It is a movie split in to 8 parts = 8 parts of 200 MB each.

I have downloaded them ( 4 parts ) from rapidshare link.

I have tried the following players

The KM Player
VLC
K-Lite media player.
