Solve : Computer running too much memory-- friend with same computer has no problem?

Answer»

My friend and I have the exact same computer: a Toshiba SATELLITE C55t-A5305 with an AMD A6 processor. We run Windows 8.

The only difference, though, is that when our computers are idle, with nothing running, when we open up the task manager we see that my computer is running an incredibly high percentage of its memory while her's isn't. I don't KNOW much about the technical aspects of computers, but I'm sure that's not right.

When she and I try to run games, we can be running the exact same game and mine has far more lag than her's does. My computer just doesn't run nearly as fast as her's, even though our computers should be identical.

Here's a picture of what my task manager looks like when my computer is idle. Does anyone have any ideas about what's wrong, or any suggestions of what I should do?

Thanks a lot.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Not a complete list by any means...I don't think I understand what you mean. Not a complete list of what my task manager looks like? I showed the things that are running the most memory, and I figured if anything stood out as strange it would be up there.

Unless you're talking about a description of my problem. I really don't know what else I can say about it. I noticed this problem within 2 months of me purchasing the computer, but I really didn't think anything of it until my friend bought the same one and her's ran faster than mine did. I bought this computer back in January.

If there's any more information I can give to help figure out what the problem might be, let me know.Even when I shut my computer down and restart it, my memory is as high as it is right now. Unfortunately I don't have a snapshot of my friend's task manager for comparison...

I don't know about a virus; I ran a virus protection program and didn't find anything, but of course, that doesn't always work. It happened so early into me buying the computer, though, and I don't really feel as though I did anything to get a virus in that short time. Quote from: gnmnj on August 10, 2014, 05:40:36 PM

Maybe too many programs running  in the background
Or maybe a virus
The later is more LIKELY. The number of PC s running unwanted remote teaks might be much higher that what one might expect.
Recently CBS News reported this:
Malware hijacked half a million computers
Quote
Law enforcement sources told CBS News the criminal operation allegedly involved stealing information, controlling computers, and exploiting people whose computers were hacked. This investigation was separate from another major hacking case  ...
The malware allows hackers to steal personal information, intercept keystrokes and hijack webcams to make secret recordings of their users. BlackShades also can be used to encrypt and lock a computer's data files, blocking the rightful owners from regaining access unless they pay a ransom.
So, the prudent thing to do is scan for malware.
EDIT: From the same CB S report:
Quote
In a BlackShades-related related investigation before the latest global arrests, Dutch police earlier this year arrested a 18-year-old man for using the malware to take pictures of women and girls using about 2,000 computers.
Alright, thanks. I'll try thatDo you have an anti virus app installed and always resident?

If so, please run full scans with BOTH your anti virus app AND with MalwareBytesHi, try this out to see what is running on your system at start up..

Click on START UP (bottom left of screen)

Type in the SEARCH PROGRAMS or SEARCH BOX.. "msconfig"

Click on the "msconfig" to open it up, when you open this a box will appear on your screen.

In the box you will see i think for memory, 5 tabs..

Click on the START UP tab.

It will show you a list of programs that are STARTING up on your system when you start up the computer, having to many of these with a tick can and will slow down your start up and system, cause to many things are running at once.

Uncheck some if you know what they are, and are not associated with the windows start up programs..anything else like software you may have downloaded or added does not need to be ticked in the box as you dont need this to start when you start your computer, uncheck third party programs, once you do this if you can, then the system will run quicker to start up and the problem of the computer using to much memory..this will help you..

Also a good idea is to check what is running and using a lot of memory is open the task manager, look at what is running the most and look at the names of the programs, do a google search if you can on that name: EXAMPLE: windows.exe..
Google will tell you what it is and wether or not it is ok or maybe a virus or a trojan got into the system...if so then look at having these removed. Try these first and see how you go with your system..
