Solve : Converting Music Files?

Could someone please ADVISE me of the best way to take music from a cd and convert it to a mp3 format so that i can play it on my Ipod. I'm looking for some free software if possible.

What software - or combination of softwares - did you find, that you liked and used? ....just curious.I believe Audacity will convert. I've been USING Winamp with the mp3 output plugin for years.
