Data in command shell and windows explorer can be sorted many WAYS and one way is by FileName in alpha numerics where numbers come first and then A to Z so files ascending WOULD be: 001.txt 005.jpg Apple.log Zebra.doc Additionally Windows Indexes Files to know where they are so that when you open up Windows Explorer to look for a file its faster at gathering the information about that/those file(s). WITHOUT an INDEX Windows would have to discover what could be millions of files each time it opens a new window showing files in folders or directories.The question sounds like homework...and makes no sense.
