Answer» Win XP H. Some files are continiously in use and can not be defragmented. almost none of the MFT can be defragmented. this is why it is best to reserve the best amount for the MFT, to try to reduce framgmentation of the MFT. Some low-level tools might be able too, but They are likely expensive.Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 24, 2008, 04:41:43 AM almost none of the MFT can be defragmented. this is why it is best to reserve the best amount for the MFT, to try to reduce framgmentation of the MFT. Actually, Diskeeper full versions will defrag the MFT. The crippled ones like the free DK 'Lite' or the XP defragger will not defrag the MFT. The windows defragger from XP onwards has functionality for MFT defrag built into the Diskeeper/Microsoft defrag API, but apparently most of the defraggers except the commercial ones do not/cannot actually utilize that feature. DK2008 onwards can defrag all but the initial section of the MFT without even requiring a boot time run. To the OP: not sure if this is the answer to your question, but the MFT always exists as 2 fragments. The second 'fragment' is actually a MIRROR image of the first few RECORDS of the full MFT and is stored in a location that is 'far away' (don't ask how far; I don't know ) from the real MFT. This is in order to be able to recover the VOLUME if the original MFT gets corrupted. Some utilities may report even a fully defragmented MFT as 2 fragments, so maybe that's what you are seeing. Again, I am not 100% certain about the above explanation. Thank you all for the replies. Aztec. Yes, the $mftmirr metadata file is what you refer to (I think), I've quoted it below. In the overall picture it's a very small file, just 8 logical sectors, compared to the $mft. A lot more reading to do on the subject of the MFT and its format, I believe my problem lies in not fully understanding the information available.. Quote Master File Table Mirror ($MftMirr) Thanks again for your time.for all intents and purposes- your drive is defragmented. With the minute size of the MFT i'm not sure why this was even a concern to begin with. The fragmentation of the MFT was NEVER a concern. The size of the MFT is immaterial. The thread was started in order to try to improve my knowledge of the defragmentation process with regard to the MFT and what VARIOUS defragging tools can do, and to gain some understanding of the information which is available to me. Asking a question does not imply concern about its subjectGot it... |
