Solve : Deleted dvd/cd rom drive?

Answer»

I'm using windows vista on a T3612 emachine. I noticed my e drive, which is the dvd/cd rom drive was missing. Is there a way to reinstall it or download something that could fix it? Also, what could cause it to just delete/disappear? I think I had something like a virus (not a virus, I think they are called trojans or malware. I'm completely computer illiterate, sorry.) because I used a few programs to "clean out" the comp when it was running slow and a bunch of things came up that needed to be deleted. Hope this makes sense, thanks in advance for anyone who helps.A trojan is a virus. It's possible that one corrupted your driver. Of course, we have no idea what these "clean up" programs are that you used, so there's no telling what might've happened. In any case, if you are still having virus issues, feel free to head over to our Malware section of the forum for help.

As for your optical drive...I'm not super familiar with Vista (spawn of the devil), but I believe you can access the Device Manager by going to Start > Control PANEL > System and Maintenance > Device Manager. Once there, are you able to find your CD/DVD drive? Are there question marks or exclamation points? If you find either of these next to your CD/DVD drive, right click on the drive (in Device Manager), and then choose to uninstall. After uninstalling, restart your computer and it should be reinstalled automatically.I went to device manager and looked under disk drives, there is only one drive there and I don't know what I would look at to identify which drive it is. Its says a bunch of numbers and letters then ATA Device. It also says the device is working properly, should I still uninstall this and restart the computer?
I'm sorry I FORGOT to mention which programs I use. They are TREND Micro Anti-virus, which came pre installed on the computer, and Malwarebytes-Anti Malware.
Thanks for your help.Quote from: Ash2184 on December 11, 2008, 06:13:23 AM
