Solve : Disc drive trouble?

Answer»

I have 2 DISK drives: One DVD player and one DVD burner. Lately when I put a DVD in either drive, it doesn't recognize it. The icons for the drives show up, but it does not recognize the DVD. It treats it as if it were empty. I have windows XP.Can you try System RestoreTry one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.I tried reinstalling the drives, but it still doesn't work. The DVD doesn't even start spinning. I'm pretty sure it's not the hardware, because both drives do the same thing. Also, both of them used to work just fine, and I haven't DONE anything weird to my computer.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 22, 2008, 07:22:24 PM

Did you try my three possible solutions?I tried all the solutions, and it is still doing the same thing. As far as I know, none of the programs will recognize that there is a DVD in the drive, but the computer still has the icons for the drives. Would reinstalling windows help? You can try Windows repair, first: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
It may be also good idea to try those drives in another computer.Have you tried disconnecting both those drives physically and re-connecting them ? ?
Tried a new IDE cable ? ?
Is this machine having any other issues ? ?Sorry it took me so long to respond...I moved and wasn't able to use the internet right away. Does it make any difference if the drives will play data CDs, but not DVDS? I did not try an audio CD. Quote

What do you mean? Difference to whom?Hello , I have the same problem and I was searching on the internet solutions and I found this forum . My father told me 1-2 weeks ago that he was trying to watch a movie , but the DVD drive wouldn't read the DVD . Today I tryed to some DVDs . I inserted the DVDs in the DVD drive , it spined and then it stoped . I tryed another one , another one ... Why isn't it reading them ? I don't think it's a problem with the computer because I have a CD drive and it WORKS normally and its much more older than the DVD drive .The DVD is an LG one

Can someone help me ? radu_iceman
