I link Excel cell values to the associated Word document. I copy in Excel then go Paste Special>Past link>unformatted text and that PLACES the Excel value in the doc. I can then change the cell value and the doc value changes accordingly. That has worked for numerous occasions when I have changed the cell value shortly after putting the link in place. But it no longer works for thos that worked days ago. Is there something I should have done before Saving Excel and Word and shutting down?What version of MS Office are you using? Regardless, Paste Special>Past link>unformatted text isn't going to work. If you're using Office 2003, search Word's Help on link to Excel worksheet and then click on search result titled Copy Excel data and CHARTS to Word or PowerPoint. On that Help page, expand the link for Paste the data into Word.

I have Office 2000 and 'Copy Excel data and charts to Word or PowerPoint' does not come up on that. The instructions it provides do not appear to handle Excel data cells.I just did it on my old computer with Office 97. So, surely, the capability exists in Office 2000. The procedure with Office 97 is different from Office 2003.

I don't have Office 2000. But, surely the feature exists in Office 2000 if it exists in Office 97. All I can suggest is being more resourceful and persistent in using Help in Word. As with Office 2003, I started my search in Office 97 with "link to excel worksheet". The finding with the pertinent explanation was titled "Use linked and embedded objects to share information between Office programs".I have done that and it entails browsing to find the Excel source file for the object and then I could not see how to identify the cell containing the value. I went back to Help and SEARCHED on 'paste special' to get the item 'Use linked and embedded objects to share information between Office programs' I went to that and it provided the instructions that I had previously used successfully, as noted in my original post. The links subsequently broke, for some reason. I notice that when I load the Word file there is a message 'Updating fields' which suggests to me that this is breaking the new links but I do not know how to check that out.I have loaded both the Word doc and the Excel worksheet and CHECKED a number of the links. I see a similar message with Office 2003. I don't think that this indicates "that this is breaking the new links". I believe that's normal behavior when you have data in Word that's linked to an Excel worksheet. Even though the data in Excel may not have changed since you last opened the Word file, 'Updating fields' is a standard procedure that occurs each time you open such a Word file. It's just Word checking to see whether there's been any change in the Excel data. Thank you for that explanation of the field update. In a later post I have pointed out that I am unable to find broken links now. The problem could well have simply been 'finger trouble' on my part. I am now getting a Word error message to the effect that there is insufficient memory to undo the requested the SAVE action. I have had this type of memory problem on a number of occasions. I have carried out the recommended procedures for allocating memory but there still seems to be something wrong.
