Solve : Firewall problem??

Answer»

hi all ,

im quite new to all this so here it goes...

I recieved an old PC off my sister which had windows xp professional(have to log in as admin) anyhoo... i tried to connect to the internet via internet explorer and it came up with the error "page cannot be displayed", so i obviosly thought i had done sum thing to the connection. Start > run>cmd>ping www.google.com ..... but it acually recieved and sent pakages.. so i know the internet works and it would allow microsoft updates.. when i loaded windows live meesenger up, again it would not connect to the internet and the troubleshoot told me there was a firewall or proxy stopping me from connecting.. but i cannot find any program that is stopping the connection from occuring. (mozilla works, but bitcomet, limewire, msn, IE and steam does not connect to the net?)

i have recently FOUND out it is an ex university PC(might have a certain firewall on) and i was wondering what i could do to get connected WITHOUT having to re install windows XP??

thanks for reading
