S.M.A.R.T. technology was developed by a number of major hard disk drive manufacturers in a concerted effort to increase the reliability of drives. It is a technology that enables the PC to predict the future failure of hard disk drives. S.M.A.R.T. technology has become an industry standard for hard drive manufacturers.
Download diagnostics from hard drive manufacturer and test. Most have version that will create a boot floppy, so booting from the hard drive is not necessary. Is there anyway to fix the hardrive , or do i need to go buy a new one? I had problems in my PC in the past but not a Hardrive Failture , is there a way to revert this or something?SMART predicts hardware failures, so the fix is normally a shopping trip. Manufacturers diagnostic software often CONTAINS a utility that will attempt to make repairs. If it is successful, you buy a little time. If unsuccessful, it will tell you that repairs cannot be made. In either event, back your your files and get a new HD.If the HD with the self-monitor error is making clicking or humming noises, it COULD be having bearing trouble. FLIPPING the drive over and mounting it inverted can relieve some stress on failing bearing portions and keep the drive functional longer. Then go through and copy out all your data to CDROM while it works, and while you wait on your replacement drive.
Maxtor's MaxBlast and WD's DataLifeguard can be used to do diagnostics on the drive to see if it is suitable for further service as a SECONDARY drive after a new one runs as your boot drive. You may have to disable SMART monitoring in BIOS to complete a bootup.
