Solve : Forgot password on Non-internet capable laptop?

Answer»

Someone please help!!

I've got an old Dell that had Windows 98 SE (I loved that version).  Now I have a new laptop with Vista (yuch!, see why I loved 98!).  Anyway, I needed to transfer all of my grandbaby pics and other photos from the old computer to the new but Windows transfer doesn't work on 98..... Hence, I upgraded the Dell to Windows 2000... and promptly forgot the darn password.. I've written lists of possible passwords and tried everyone twice but nothing WORKS under either the user or the administrator.   So, now I can't get into my old computer to view any files, much less transfer them to the new laptop.   I've looked at the recovery TIPS but they all seem to rely on an internet connection to crack the password once you've used their boot disk.

How can I get into that computer?  I am not that savy on a computer, I understand how to turn one on and run the basics to get my job done, that's about it.

Thanks!
Welcome to the CH forums.

I have to advise that the CH forum rules do not allow the discussion of how to find passwords or "get round" other security measures.   One reason is that, while not doubting you, we cannot be certain of the ownership of the pc in QUESTION.   The pc may have come into possession illegally and the new 'owner' then needs to crack passwords to gain access.

Below is the relevant quote from the rules..

We do not help with cd-keys, cracks, and warez. This is not negotiable.

Good luck.OK, I understand that.  Problem is now its worse!

In trying to figure it out myself, I realized by pushing keys that I still had the 2000 Pro UPGRADE disk in the drive... So, based on previous posts that I read, I re-installed Windows 2000 Pro on my old laptop...

I can now get into my computer but EVERYTHING IS GONE.  All my grandbaby pics, my pics from my honeymoon, everything.  Some things I had backed up on disks, but some where just downloads from family emails.  I can't find any folders in the program files, my documents is empty.  Is there anyway to recover the lost files?

Not being able to get into the laptop was one thing, I knew the pics were there.  But this is just heartbreaking.  What can I do??You can try one of the many file-recovery programs available on the WWW, few are free, many are not free.  Here is a link to just one of them.

Good luck.A free one:    http://www.recuva.com Quote from: Dusty on April 01, 2008, 06:57:11 PM

Good luck.

[email protected] File Recovery gets loads of recommendations.

Try to do as little as possible on the PC until you have searched for the files. The more you write to the disk the lesser chance you have of finding them.

The free tools are efficient but far from as powerful as paid versions. So you may consider paying for the recovery.
Recover My Files - Has great reviews with demo results before you buy

In the future I suggest using a free online photo storage site. PREVENTION is the best method. Here are a few good ones.
