Solve : getting older software to work on XP?

Answer»

Hi! I have many SOFTWARE programs that WORKED great on Windows 95, but they won't work on Windows XP. When I try to install them I get this error message:
"16 Bit WIndows Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to TERMINATE the application."
I then have the option of choosing CLOSE or IGNORE. Whichever one I choose, I am not able to proceed to the installation. I have tried the program compatability wizard with every possible setting, and I always get the same error message. Is there any way I can run these programs on Windows XP (Home Edition) ?? :-/

I had this problem once... See this link. This will solve the problem... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767 ...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thats the downside of winxp+ more anyway have a look here>http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/appcompat.mspxI started to follow the guideline that flame suggested, and after I typed the first line of stuff in the black box ( sorry I don' t KNOW what it is called!!) This is what it said to me:
Microsoft File EXPANSION Utility Version 5.1.2600.0
Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-1999. All rights reserved.

Destination is not a directory: c:\windows\system32\config.nt.That is known as the command prompt.. Follow the directions VERY carefully... They explain EXACTLY what to do... By the way... You have to type in this exactly... CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt (except for the CD ROm drive letter in the beginning. That is up to your computer configuration. You have to figure out which letter it is in... Usually D or E )

[glb]Flame[/glb]You can restore a backup version from the repair directory:

copy c:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt c:\windows\system32

This also works for CONFIG.NT

Hope this helps. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! It works!!!! lol, I was literally typing CD_ROM DRIVE LETTER instead of putting a letter! Thanks so much for your help!!!
