Solve : Graphics driver help please?

Answer»

I have an HP pavilion that is a few years old now, I believe I bought it in '03 or early '04,  and it's running WinXP.

For almost a year I've been having intermittent problems with my graphics driver, which as far as I know is Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV.  Everytime I think it's finally stopped it comes back.  I've tried tracing it to new programs, JAVA updates, McAfee updates, nothing seems to set it off, so I don't know what causes it.  The computer will randomly crash or reboot, and occasionally I have problems with it on start up, and if I do an error report it always blames it on the graphics driver.  I'm getting really tired of it.  I reinstalled the driver last year with the most recent ONE available on the HP site, but that didn't work.  Is this something that I can fix?  Or will I be FORCED to either put up with it or get a new computer?  I assume this driver has something to do with the video card?  Could I replace that?  Or is that totally different?  Any advice would be welcome, thank you.  What is the error, you're getting?
If it really comes from your video card, you can always buy a real video card. If you don't need anything fancy, they're pretty cheap.I get a few different errors.

Usually what happens is that even if the computer seems to boot normally, it gives me a box after XP fully loads that "the system has recovered from a serious error".  If I report the error, it tells me that it was caused by the Intel Graphics Driver and that they don't have any suggestions on how to fix it other than reinstalling the driver.  This happens frequently.  Sometimes the computer will crash and reboot suddenly, or other TIMES it will just freeze and I need to do a cold shut down, and when it restarts I get the "recovered from a serious error" message.

Other times I have gotten a blue screen that says that the driver is stuck in an infinite loop and to restart the computer and that if it keeps happening to reinstall the driver or contact the manufacturer.

And then a couple times the screen has blinked off and comes up again with the screen in extremely low resolution and 8 or 16 colors, then an error message tells me that the graphics driver has stopped working and to restart the computer, and that it will give me a chance to report the error on restart.

Then I've had times where I don't really get an error message, it just won't boot up...it just stops and then restarts, often several times, or it freezes and I have to shut it down.

Does that tell you anything?  I'm at a loss.  I'm fairly good with computers but this is beyond me.   Thanks.
Will it boot OK into Safe Mode?
When you said, you reinstalled video driver, did you uninstall old one, FIRST?It seems to go fine into Safe Mode, at least once or twice last year I had to go into Safe Mode and I used an earlier configuration to reboot, which worked.

I am not sure about the driver....I believe I looked up what to do and followed the directions, but I don't remember now, it was so long ago.  If it works OK in Safe Mode, it may be just driver issue.
Download the newest driver, uninstall current one, and install new one.
