Answer» Thanks for this service. I have a HP-Pavilion 6630, 64MB,10.2GB HARD drive, Win.98. For some time up at start-up I would get message "operating system not found" Tapping on TOP of box and restarting 5-6 times it would open Win. 98. To avoid this I left it on. We had a power outage and I have been unable to restart. When I try to install HP recovery disk it aborts. In my BIOS Setup Utility it shows: Primary Master--NONE Primary Slave --NONE Secondary Master--[CD-ROM] Secondary Slave None Any suggestions, or is my hard drive ca-put ?? Thanks for the replys, GaryObtain a diagnostic tool from your HDD's manufacturer website.
See to it that all wires are properly connected.
"Tapping" your PC to make it work is never a good idea..Raptor, Thanks for the reply,I do understand that tapping on the computer is NOT in the owners manual, but us folks in flyover COUNTRY work with what works, until it don't work! It's like turning the rabbit ears or putting tinfoil on then for better reception. Ha,Ha-Anyway thanks again and I'll explore your suggestions. This is a great site! Thanks, GaryWhen I replace the hard drive in my coumpter will I have to buy a windows program, or can I reinstall with the recover disk that came with it when it was new?I take it your Hard Disk Drive is failing?
It may depend on the kind of Recovery disk that was given with your PC - I have no experience with these. I'd prefer a fully FUNCTIONAL OS over a Recovery Disk. The recovery disk would probably work, but just make sure that your processor has not changed since you got the computer, becuase computer companies require you to use a certain processor before you can use the recovery disk(s) on your computer. They do this so that you don't give the disk or disks to a friend with a Gateway computer, and have him or her get a FREE OS. Also, you should put in the disk that has the OS in it first, becuase there is nothing on that old HD for it to recover.
[glb]Flame[/glb]raptor i've been reading some of your responces to other computer friends like me so now i have a question for you. so here it is i bought a ibm thinkpad 380z at a yard sale for a small price i have run every diagnostic test i can think of . in the command prompt mode it tells me no drives found after i fdisk it , it says no fixed disks found and if i format it,it says no drives found i guess the only conclusion is the hard drive is completely gone do you know where i can get one that won't cost me an arm and a leg or do you know someone who has one and wants to sell it cheap if you can help contact me thanks for your timeIf you can, check the connections to the HDD. Perhaps they have become loose or need replacing.
As for a cheap HDD.. Depends on where you're from? I'd try Ebay or a similair website.
