Solve : Help Getting Around Uninstall Shield?

Answer»

I bought NWN 2 a few weeks ago, and installed it. Everything seemed fine until I try to leave the first room of the game. Then my computer goes to a blue screen which shows some information that I can’t read in time, then Restarts. I’ve tried defragging but that didn’t work. When I try to uninstall or repair the program this prompt pops up from NWN 2.

>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp(476)
PAPP:Neverwinter Nights 2
PVENDOR:Atari (http://www.atari.com/nwn2)
PGUID:F20C1251-1D0A4944-B2AE-678581B33B19
$10.0.0.159
@Windows XP Service Pack 2 (2600) IE 7.0.5730.11

Then another prompt from InstallShieldWizard pops up telling me that’s there’s been Setup Error. It gives me some unhelpful tips. Here’s this ones error code. “-5001”

This happens whenever I try to change or remove the software, which is making it impossible for me to repair or reinstall. I don’t know enough about computers to feel comfortable just mucking around and deleting files, but I don’t know how to uninstall this thing. I assume it must not have installed properly the first time. Help?
Have you checked the web site for FAQ's, known issues, or patches/updates?

I would start with Atari.

Can you do a system restore to a point before this install? No patches or updates.

I did go through Atari first, but apparently they're undergoing an office move and are busy. It took them two weeks to get back to me, and then all it was was a AUTOMATED response telling me about their situation and suggesting a few links (this one among them).

I may be able to use a system restore point, but I have done some work and other things on the computer since then and I would be nervous about losing it all/forgetting to back up some things. I was KINDA hoping there would be a way without resorting to system restore. What about a repair install? Your data would be safe, but it requires a real Windows CD. Do you have one of those, as opposed to a restore CD?

The fact that you cannot defrag the hard drive points to BASIC issues with the hardware or operating system.Quote

Have you turned off Auto re-boot on System FAILURE?Sorry I wasn't clear. The defrag did go as normal, but it didn't have any effect over my problem.

I ended up just using System Restore. It worked. I thought I was in the clear and happily re-installed the game. Exact same issue as before.

I turned off auto-reboot so I could get a better look at the problem. The blue screen gives this technical information along with the regular spiel.

I feel bad getting your guy's help for this, it's Atari that should be helping me out. That error points towards Microsoft {KB 325730} but Microsoft is not playing fair at the moment.

I'll try again later for it.

Because of the nvidia reference I must ask if you updated your video drivers from the manufacturer's website?

You mentioned no game patches, I clicked on your link and found one straight away.MSDN is showing no results either...

I'll keep trying as well.

Have you recently added any hardware to that machine ? ?

Check Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager to make sure nothing is wonked...wonked :-?
