Solve : I need help with my OS...or lack of?

Answer»

I tried to erase the OS off of my laptop and install MANDRAKE Linux on it. I used to have Windows 98, but now I don't have either. Everytime I boot my computer up, it comes up with the message that it cannot find an operating SYSTEM. If I can get into the BIOS, then I can solve this problem with ease, but I can't even do that. The second I hit that power button, it tells me that it can't find an operating system. Even if I have the Linux boot disk in the CD drive, it won't do anything. I just got this laptop from a friend and I would hate for it to go to waste. Please help me!Quote

How did you remove Windows 98 it sounds like that the hard drive was not formatted that is the only way to do a clean install, you might like to try this put the operating system disk you want to install and restart the computer when it restart press any key to see if it will boot from the CD.Quote

Are you sure you are completely shutting down?I was completely shutting it down. I even took the battery out. I ended giving to one of my friends and he fixed it. I don't know how, but he did. Now, I'm going to enjoy andrake Linux! Good luck with it.
Don't forget to create a user account and only LOG on as root for system change stuff.
Linux can be pretty unforgiving. LOL
