Solve : i82801aa AC97 Win98SE sound driver??

Answer»

Device is BIOS enabled. Hardware Props. auto-download from MS avails nowt.
Have scoured the web inc. Intel & can't find it anywhere!
Can't AFFORD XP which I know does include this driver.
Does anyone know if the dreaded ME has it built in?
It's for a Compaq Deskpro
PIII 800Mhz(Coppermine)
i815 Solano chipset
It's a Win98 logoed system and it's an onboard device so I'm sure this driver must EXIST somewhere!
Could some kind soul please try and help? I can supply AIDA32 info. further to the above if this helps.

NB A long while ago I found a driver listed as being for this device written by Realtek but it can't have been right because the install BSOD-ed and crashed my system irretreivably.#6 here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=179&OSFullName=Windows*+Me&lang=eng&strOSs=22&submit=Go!Thanks - the graphics driver is the one and the App. Accelerator does help general performance but - despite fresh attempts with the software on this page installed...still no sound device!I said #6: INF Update Utility - Zip Format (1927KB) - chipset driveryep installed that as well - zip first then the .exe
sorry should have made that clearIn that case, I'd assume, your on-board sound chip is dead.
You may need to buy cheap sound card (~$15).XP finds it and works it fine...but £65 for a new OS? Linux presents a whole raft of other even worse problems or I'd be using that INSTEAD of 98SE cos Big L. finds and uses the sound no probs.Right - obviously this is a non-starter...I'll have to install Tux and fight the inevitable battles over modem detection and driver INSTALLATION and GOD knows what.
Thanks anyway.
