Solve : Images/faces dark when I open a video to view it.?

I have Windows XP, Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop, 2½ years old, (the computer, not me).

Recently on any videos I try to watch, the images, particularly faces are all solidly black, darkened, not viewable.
I've ALWAYS used Windows Media Player which was the default when I BOUGHT the computer.

I just do mostly basic stuff on the computer. I am not a "TECHIE".

I'm also new to your service & any Forum. If you need additional info please let me KNOW. Any help is CERTAINLY appreciated.

when did this start and is videos the only thing taht is too dark
