Solve : Instant Messenger?

Answer»

Hi! I am looking for a free instant messenger program. I had AIM back in the day, but I got fed up with AOL, got rid of it all, and haven't had any kind of messenger since. Any suggestions? Are there any good programs compatible with AIM?
By the way I have Windows XP Home SP2 with Internet Explorer 6.Just use your Google button:

<------------Well, you don't have to use AOL in order to use AIM.  Apparently, most of the other IM programs are compatible with AIM.  The only compatibility issue I see mentioned on http://www.pcworld.com/browse/1369/topic.html?page=1 is Yahoo, MSN Messenger IM Networks Not Yet Compatible

Should you get whatever program your FRIENDS are USING... otherwise what's the point

I BELIEVE MSN (now called Live Messenger) is the most popular. Quote

So, if he IMs with many people and, among them, they use 5 different IM programs, is he supposed to install all of them?  Why would that be necessary, when most of the are compatible with each other?
I ended up getting Trillian, which is compatible with all the others that I need. Thanks for the INPUT
