It's a browser plug-in that you would need if you visit websites that use Java. If you don't visit websites that use Java, you do not need to install it. Do you visit any websites where you can't use certain features and you get some message on your screen saying you need to install Java to view a certain feature on the website? Again, If you don't visit websites that use Java, you do not need to install it. To determine/verify whether you have Java installed, visit http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml Are you SURE you don't already have some version of it installed? If your running Windows XP, LOOK in your Add or Remove Programs LIST. It will appear there if you have it installed.yea i have it, and it always wants to download updates and this and that. i may or may not visit some sites that need java. i may keep the program but DISABLE updates, etc. The updates really don't take up more space on your hard drive because the older version can be deleted once the latest version has been installed via "update". Do you see more than one version of Java in your Add or Remove Programs list? If so, remove all but the latest. Then, go ahead and install the update. After doing so, open your Add or Remove Programs list again and, if you have multiple, i.e. two, versions, remove the older one. Up until Java(TM) 6 Update 11, installing the updates without first removing older version(s) would result in multiple versions being installed. But, with update 12 and later, the updates automatically remove the older version. |
