Solve : Java/ Flash updates??

Answer»

Hey folks,

someone told me to update Flash and Java so that i can watch streamings.

my questions:
what are Flash and Java?

I've thought flash is a memory type and java a language (and an island in SE Asia)

How can i find out which versions i have?
When i enter Java in my start box i get loads of Java things...
Which is the one to update and which version shall i choose?

Just go to www.java.com and www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer and all your questions will be answered. Are you unable to watch any streamed media on the Internet?

Most likely, you have some version of both installed.  To see whether you have Java installed, go to your Control Panel and look for Java.  You will see an icon there if you have it installed.  It will also appear in your Control Panel\Programs and Features list.

Java normally prompts users to update.  Have you ever seen an alert or PROMPT telling you an update to Java is available?  If you do have it installed (again, look in your Control Panel), you can see what version you have by opening the Java panel (by double clicking on the icon) and clicking on About.

thanks to both of you so far...

i went to the respective web sites and downloaded JavaTM 6 update 13 and flash player 10 active x.

did i do this correctly? both are now listed in control panel "programmes and features" but flash player has no size specification  ; Java has 94 MB...

Before that i checked and i didnt seem to have any Java at all but i had adobe things. i forget which ones

Two weeks ago i reinstalled vista with my recovery cd

I cant watch this Dutch programme since,( i can watch other streamings though):

http://www.obalive.nl/default.aspx?lIntEntityId=922

That's just a web page; it has no streaming media embedded in the page, itself.

When I click on "bekijk item", a .wmv file is presented, which normally requires Windows Media Player (WMP).  I have WMP and, SURELY, you do, too.  But, I was not able to play it, apparently due to lack of a necessary codec.  To reiterate, I do not get a "web site not found" message; but, WMP will not play the .wmv file due to a missing codec.  A reference on codecs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codecs.  I suspect you may have the same problem, although your comment about  i get a "web site not found" message seems odd.  Thanks, Sojabohne, for your reaction. Apparently i didn't exactly know what "streaming" means.

I'm shelving this, i'm not giving up, going to do some homework by looking up "streaming", "active x" "container formats" codecs" and such...i need patience, english wiki articles can be fairly copious.

I downloaded k -lite, wasnt comfortable with it as i had heard that it can f... up the directory, and this didn't work either, so i deinstalled k-lite...

And i've just been checking the message that i get, when i hit "bekijk item", just to make sure, because you SAID it's odd, AND NOW ITS WORKING !

The VLC player does the job - as it did weeks ago before my reinstallment of Vista.

Why now? Must have something with k-lite, but i deinstalled it, STRANGE.

A year ago i opened up a YouTube account and i had similar problems, you upload a video, the video gets processed, which seems to take ages, and then i got a "failed" message, no explanation given, can be frustrating.
But after a time i learnt that this is a major issue on YouTube and elsewhere this format thing...

All in all still lots of work ahead of me to overcome basic dummyhood.
I'm sure i'm going to watse your time again pretty soon.

Thanks...
