Solve : Linux/XP OS problem?

Answer»

I have been using Linux Jaunty for the PAST 6 months or so with no problems on the kid's computer. Upgraded to Karmic yesterday and things were not working well, system shutdown for no reason several times, poor video streaming, slow response. So I got this stupid idea to reload XP using the compaq recovery discs. Now the third disc won't load, and I'd like to just reload Jaunty and move on but it won't boot from the disc. I can still access BIOS screen.

This is a Compaq Presario SR1010NX circa 2004.

I'm hoping I can undo the damage...Do you have the BIOS settings set so that CD-ROM is the first boot device?

I believe the Compaq Presario SR1010NX originally had 256MB of RAM. Is that what you have in it?Quote from: soybean on June 11, 2010, 08:48:21 AM

YES the BIOS setting is changed and the RAM is at 1GB.

I must have had a bad disc; I had a Linux "Puppy" DISTRO that I knew worked and the system works off it but doesn't want to install onto the HD. While it appears it is installed when I try starting it w/o disc I get a line that says something like "Can't find NTLDR (or something like that)" If I were you now, assuming that the linux cd works fine as a live cd, follow the instructions on this link to format the hard drive through linux.

But before you do that, if the linux cd were stuck not able to install to HD, then just reburn a newly downloaded copy of linux before you format so you can reinstall. Quote from: 2x3i5x on June 11, 2010, 10:00:17 PM

Yes thank you~~that does sound like the best way! I moved all info to my mac before I started tinkering so nothing will be lost. But first download the newest Ubuntu DISTRIBUTION. Jaunty is 2 versions old, Lucid (10.04) is the newest version, and the best Ubuntu ever. You can test everything you like by just booting the cd because it's a live-cd.Quote from: Oracle on June 18, 2010, 02:07:04 AM
