Solve : Master Boot Record help?

Answer»

I need help understanding how the Recovory Console in win xp works??

Say your Master Boot Record is damaged so you put your Win XP CD in and get to the DOS Command prompt.

And you Type FIXMBR

I know it should make a new Master Boot Record for you.

What I don't understand is this?
When it makes your new MBR does it go in the same place as the old one and Overide it??

And if your old MBR is damaged how does it get the information that the new MBR NEEDS? Like how many Clustrs you have the FAT you use and all the things it gets at Installation??http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-393243.phpFrom MS:

If an invalid or nonstandard partition table signature is detected, you will be prompted whether you WANT to continue. If you are not having problems accessing your drives, you should not continue. Writing a new master boot record to your system partition could damage your partition tables and cause your partitions to become inaccessible.

The MBR is created when the drive is partitioned.
The old fdisk program did this in Windows 98. If the MBR was damaged somehow, we would fix it with:
FDISK /mbr
The was often needed after playing with the early distros of Linus a few years ago. Normally there would not be a reason to have the MBR damaged. Some kind of Toot Kit might try to alter the MBR. Some third party PROGRAMS do it.

With Windows 2000 and XP it was a case of programs like System Commander or Partition Magic that messed up the MBR.

Now with Windows Vista and Windows 7, we have to learn it all over again. The new thing is now the GUID. Please don't ask me what I know about GUID, becasue I will be very embarrassed to tell you how little I understand it. I know that can be fixed via recovery console.

use your installation cd to boot and choose recovery console... If you need help you may type help on the recovery console to give you list of command available...

good luck. Quote from: nymph4 on September 11, 2009, 07:29:22 PM

The fixmbr command in Recovery Console writes new MBR code to a hard disk. Thus it "fixes" (repairs) the MBR.
