Answer» Hey guys, this might not be the most appropriate place to post as it's really a game problem, but I thought I'd see if anybody could help me anyway.
Basically when I play old games on my PC (example: tie FIGHTER) I can get the sound to work, although it is often a little distorted, but the music won't play at all. This is a shame for me cos I LOVE the music It uses MIDI to play. When I go to the sound card setup OBVIOUSLY my sound blaster live isn't listed there, and none of the others will work.
I did actually get it to work once under the 'general MIDI' and setting the tie fighter program to run under win95 compatibility mode, but every time I've tried since the loading screen freezes and I have to set the music sound card to 'none' for the game to work.
Any ideas what I can do? Thanks! The easiest way is to get an old PC to run old games on. WOrks for me.
Compatibility mode is great when it works, but when it doesn't.....
Older games required sound drivers, etc. to make direct hardware calls. Modern versions of Windows do not like this.http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs
Try VDM sound. Once installed, right click the program exe and click load/run with VDM sound. You might need to run the setup application with VDM sound in order to set it up.Hmm that sort of worked, thanks. I heard music in the sound card setup program, but it won't load the game. I get an error message telling me to load the CD rom drive :-?Have you come across DOSBox? There's a LINK to it in the software FAQ (see my signature).mm I have but I can't seem to get the game to load at all in there Try uninstalling the game. When you reinstall, run the entire installation in COMPATABILITY mode. Also run the SB program for legacy support in compatability mode.It sounds like VDM sound is having difficulty from recognising your CD-ROM drive. If this is the case, then DOSBox will probably have the same problem, unless you spend the time configuring it with CD-ROM drivers etc. I'm not sure how to do this. Does VDM sound or DOSBox work with any non-cd DOS games? Generally speaking, you should try VDM sound first, as it is much faster (and easier to use) than DOSBox, but use the latter if all else fails.
