Answer»
After reinstalling XP on my laptop, i have no sound. Hours turned into days into weeks..Tried all the known & obvious..What i do know is i'm pretty sure i need the chipset for motherboard  mod. #  QCI-EF6 think this is why my realtek audio always has a yellow exclamation mark in device manager..uninstalled/ reinstalled, tried other drivers, tried "everest" system which leads me to motherboard chipset problem..from there i should be able to find a driver that works.. I have no CD & the computer is an icom which are no longer around,(liquidation)..
By no sound i mean nothing is recognized in control panel, no icon, nothing..Got a code 10 cannot start..and i'm not certain realtek is my driver anyway, but with the chipset installed maybe the hardware wizard will handle it from there.??   will trade my soul for the cure
plse email   [email protected]              many thanxPlease provide the model/BRAND of your laptop and the original OS it came with. Did it also work before reinstalling?
"icom ability" brand on laptop lid, model # 1300A  Intel celeron M350. Not certain of original OS..i think XP ?? but i did have sound before reinstall. I bought it 2nd hand for $300.
Thanx mentorOk, you mention chipset installed. Are there flags or marks under your sound device? Please post them and confirm is it a Realtec AC'97 or not? It seems the support has been gone since 2007 but hopefully we could find a sound driver for your icom laptop.I have yellow exclamation on realtek AC 97 audio & yellow ? mark on ethernet & pci modem..When i CLICK on the realtek it say "this device cannot start ( code 10 ). It is enabled but also states next to location,  PCI bus 0 device 30 function 2...for what its worth.. Have been using driver detective to auto download when i try instal / uninstal etc. then i reboot as requested only to go back to no sound & the yellow in device manager..tried to disable volume in bios start up..no good, then reset to default..
The"everest" scan still reveals nothing under chipset when i click on motherboard so i tried to download from Intel site to no avail..still no chipset..at a loss mate. thanks for your thoughtsif your under the cliff when its thrown, its yours.. Quote from: beatlejuice on June 08, 2011, 11:13:30 PM

Please be advised that Jackar Australia Pty Ltd (also known as Icom computers) was placed into administration on 6 September 2007 and subsequently placed into liquidation on 3 October 2007....
Because you reinstalled WinXP, the drivers for network adapter, sound, etc. are lost.  Since the company is out of business, identifying the laptop specifications will be difficult.  Try:  Speccy

Get Realtek drivers here:  http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/Don't know to what extent you have tried to do research on your computer however a very preliminary search on GOOGLE does bring up quite a lot of hits re specs and drivers for it. Perhaps this one will get you started as it seems to relate to both issues. I would say patience is going to be a virtue here.

The search parameter i used was "icom ability 1300a drivers". Best of luck, truenorthCheers for the reply guys..Yes, paitience or sheer stubourness prevailed..I have since fixed the issue from 2 sources..Intel realtek AC'97 is now working. Not sure what the prob was, but i stopped the H/W wizard from installing then chose my own folder to select device, that & running some Intel software for chipset maybe..I have other issues now concerning black screen boot up, ( been there a while ) but may start another thread for that. Thanks again for your advice
