In trying to help a friend out, I thought I could load a clean install of xp home on his compaq v3000 LAPTOP. Since he didnt have the disc or any other info ( he has the sticker that has the win xp home product key number). So I just decided to format the hard drive and use a xp home disc i had ( It didnt have any drivers on it) and then use his product key number. What I didnt know was one of the partitions on the HD probably had all the help that I needed. I removed all the partitions and then made one big one. What a mistake that was. So now I got XP home loaded on it, but its missing all the drivers. I CANT get online because of this lack of drivers. Ive looked in various driver web sites including the HP and the Compaq site but they all show such a variety of drivers I cant pick out the ones that I really need. Compaq says they will send me a driver disk for $17 but who knows how it will take to get it. When I look at device mgr. there are several yellow question marks next to different PCI items plus several others. So does anybody have any suggestions on how I can get this computer up and running soon.

is the compaq?I believe it is the very first one (v3000 cto) although there is no cto designation on the tag on the bottom of the computer.Start with this one

Once you get this far you should be able to get online with it. Post back with a screen shot of device manager and we will tell you what other drivers to install.Thannk you for this help. Well I guess I was to slow for my friend, he went and took it into a computer shop and paid to get it straightened out. Thanx for your help anyhow I appreciated it EVEN if he didnt. Glad to hear he got it fixed.

By the way, how much did he PAY?I think he said $75 got it back same day.That's not a bad deal...Remains dto be seen. A friend of a Friend did it who works in a computer shop. I havnt seen it yet so I wont say for sure if it was a deal or not.
Once I see device mgr. then Ill really know.
