Solve : no sound after reformatting?

Answer»

I'm trying to fix a friend of mines computer. we have reformatted recently and got the computer running except for some reason we are having TROUBLE with the SOUND.
INFO:
Operating system: windows xp
Error message: when trying to play an audio file it says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in USE by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."
Basic PC info: Gateway GT5014, Intel Pentium D processor 820,1024 MB DDR2, 250GB SATA HDD(7200 RPM with 8MB cache).

Whenever you re-install/format ALL drivers need to be re-installed...
MBoard Chipset drivers go 1st...followed by all others. Quote from: PATIO on January 01, 2010, 08:58:57 PM

If you don't have the original drivers cd that came with the pc, all of the drivers should be found at http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp?cmpid=topnavThe normal vendor driver should work, however I've found some systems need the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC to play sounds (http://download.cnet.com/SigmaTel-High-Definition-Audio-CODEC/3000-2110_4-173629.html) Quote from: cruisin702 on January 01, 2010, 11:00:20 PM
