Solve : nVidia Driver Update Hang?

Answer»

Lately, some of my games have been crashing so I tried to up date my graphics card.
I'm currently using:

Gateway
GM5088
WINDOWS Xp, Media Center Edition, Ver. 2002, SP3
Geforce 6100 (Its crap, I know)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual, 4600+, 2.41 Ghz
1.87 GB of Ram

I go To the nVidia website and download the latest driver.
Link: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_186.18_whql.html

It unpacks fine but when it GET to the "InstallSheld wizard is...Blah Blah Blah" Stage, it hangs just about 2 bars away from completing, and FREEZE's my computer up if I try to do anything, so I have to reboot.

Ive tried to leave it on overnight to see if it was just being slow, but it stayed like that all night.

Id run it in safe mode and try but its a gateway and the boot menu doesn't have such OPTIONS. If it does, I cant find it.

My best guess is that it USES all of my processing power and locks it up, but I don't know how Id fix something like that.

Edit: I tried to install the latest nVidia Control center but the same thing happens. If some one could at least give me an Idea what to do that would be great...Scrappy,

Safe mode is a feature of Windows, not of computer hardware manufacturers (like Dell, Gateway, etc.) so it doesn't matter that you have a gateway.

As soon as the gateway logo disappears press "F8" on your keyboard (when booting the computer). Feel free to press it a number of times, as it won't harm anything.

As long as you press it before the windows logo pops up, it should give you the option of "Safe mode," where you can then try loading the new driver.

good luck.
