Solve : Old ARC file? |
|
Answer» Anyone know what will open this, I think I have tried just about everyone on the net including an older arc602.exe...looking at the file(s) with a hex editor I can see it was done with (by) ARC 7.1 SEA Inc. any ideas on this? (pkunpak, winzip nothing like that worked)Have you tried WinRAR ? ?PKARC, maybe?Tried that and the pkxarc, got an :unknown file compression error, but it did extract one of the 10 files (its a .dbf file)Quote Tried thatand the pkxarc, got an :unknown file compression error, but it did extract one of the 10 files (its a .dbf file) Without a quote, it is GUESS work to know what "that" and "it" are. Just curious, which unarchiver did extract a file? The pkarc/pkxarc as well as arc602.exe couple other older ones, tried so many i forget all the names, but the one's that did anything just extract that one database file, thier are 10 files in thier, text as well as other .dbf files.Quote The pkarc/pkxarc as well as arc602.exe couple other older ones, tried so many i forget all the names, but the one's that did anything just extract that one database file, thier are 10 files in thier, text as well as other .dbf files. You can see 10 files in there somehow? or.... what? How do you know for sure there are 10? Just for fun, have a look at some of the command line switches for arc . v is for verbose listing of files. Can't hurt to try it and see what it says. t is for testing archive. What results when you try that? c is INTERESTING. "convert entry to new packing method" I'd be sure to have a backup copy of my original file before I tried this one. And I couldn't resist trying it. Sorry I'm not getting you closer to getting your files out. Maybe somebody else will come along soon with a new idea for you to try. Quote Have you tried WinRAR ? ?Quote QuoteHave you tried WinRAR ? ? Yep tried that and it didnt work either, tried in DOS and Windows, tested arc with pk(x)arc and it showed it was ok, didn't convert, I did find an ARC viewer utility here's an example of what it showed. complete.txt 10-11-93 16:50.30 3303 Crushed 1488 lbase.dbf 10-11-93 16:50.40 2000? Packed 1400? and a list of the other files in the ARC....all crushed except that one (packed) file and THATS the only one I can extract with the variety of programs I have tried. Figures are the before and after of the crushing/packing of the filesTry copying the files to another drive and unpacking them from there...It was a no go trying unpack like that, doing some reading it seems thier was a utility called squash.arc, I only could find one version on the net and it did unpack the files but they were all zero bytes, yet a arc viewer shows the files sizes and a checker shows the arc to be ok. :-?Quote It was a no go trying unpack like that, doing some reading it seems thier was a utility called squash.arc, Share the url for where you were reading. Maybe somebody else will be curious and read there - might pick up a clue that you missed. Quote I only could find one version on the net How about the url for where you downloaded it? http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/fileextensionsa.asp About the 2 versions of ARC I dont have the link off hand, was a couple hour search and i found it on a Simtel? CD, in an old FTP archive, the files was called dearc31 |
