Solve : OptiPlex GX260 56k Modem problem?

Answer»

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX260 and I installed a modem and it does not respond is it bad or is software not installed?

I went to add hardware and there is line that says PCI Simple Communications Controler and this is yellow and as I understand this is not installed, I went to Dell drivers download and I see nothing to download in this category what I am first wondering if the PCI Controler has anything to do with a 56k modem working?

JohnI forgot to add it is running on windows XP

JohnYou need a driver for the modem. If the modem was not supplied by Dell, you won't find it on their website.Quote from: John1397 on September 23, 2011, 10:31:34 AM

As CC said, that driver won't be supplied by Dell if it's something you've chose and installed.

As for the software not being installed, if you didn't install it, probably not. XP was very limited on what drivers it would automatically install for internal hardware like modems. Did the modem come with a CD or floppy or something? If so, put that in and run the drive installation. If it didn't come with a driver on a disk, what's the MAKE and model of the modem? Perhaps we can find a SUITABLE driver. What is your network connection that made you install a 56k modem? Quote from: jason2074 on September 24, 2011, 12:03:10 AM

You can still use a 56Kmodem to FAX over a standard telephone line. That's why they are known as FAX/modems.Not sure if that answers the question though...I put one modem in by conexant and XP will not recognize it and found driver for it but I believe modem is bad. Tried a modem by USRobotics windows will recognize it without installing driver but seems modem not good so will have to find good modem first then it will work. Only other problem is when HITTING start then clicking on my computer it brings it up ok but when you close it will not take it out of the taskbar and in a little while brings up box that says it has encountered an error and will close and when you click on to see what the problem is it says hungapp this must mean I have memory problem or bad MOTHER board. It had windows 2000 professional and I installed XP on the same hard drive without partion so when the computer boots it asks for which operating system you want to run this should cause no problems should it?

JohnThe question is why are you using a 56K modem...is DSL not available in your location ? ?I like it as the IP address always changes would think it makes for safer internet browsing to.

John

It's called a dynamic IP, and most DSL does that too. A 56k is no safer for browsing than DSL or cable.
