Solve : PCI Modem?

Answer»

I hope someone can help me on this. I just purchased a refurb laptop. All drivers and everything is installed correct with the exception of ONE thing. I can not GET connected to the internet. I go into device manager and I have a yellow ? next to PCI Modem. I am sure this is keeping me from getting on the internet. Also, my laptop is an IBM notepad T43. I have a 2wire wireless router that I tried to hook up to my laptop. When I connect to my laptop, it says that it is connected and has full bars. It also says I have an excellent connection but when I try to get online, it will not let me. I do not know if this is because of that yellow ? by PCI Modem or not. Now if I go onto the unsecure wireless connection (can not remember the name of it) it connects and lets me get online, but the connection is very very low. Can someone please help me out here? This is driving me crazy. Just to let everyone know, I have a desktop computer that works good. I unpluged the ethernet cable from my desktop and plug it into my laptop and can not get connected. It has to do something with my laptop I am sure. Please somebody help me out here. I would appreciate it!Can you tell us which type of ISP connection do you intend to use? PCI modem,Cable,DSL? What? If you do NOT intend to use a PCI modem you can "uninstall" it from the computer. I do not mean as a physical removal. The hardware can be removed from "remove hardware" and the software can be removed from "add/remove programs". Your computer may be trying to use your modem as it's principal ISP connection.truenorthI'm assuming you have some type of broadband.

I agree with truenorth that the PCI modem may be the problem.

That PCI modem has to be a dial up modem. I've never seen an internal DSL or cable modem for laptops. I'd disable it, especially since it's flagged in device manager.

Check network CONNECTIONS in control panel and see what's there. Thanks for the response. I have Comcast Cable. It is not dail up. So what do I need to do from here? ThanksThe network connection says Local Area Connection. Network cable unplugged.Quote from: coldes3 on February 27, 2010, 06:52:20 PM

Ok where you see the yellow symbol can you please right click on it and check the drivers... also do this when your on that really slow connection so the computer can use the internet..Ok I right clicked on the ? next to PCI Modem. I went to driver and it says

Driver Provider Unknown
Driver Date Not available
Driver Version Not available
Digital Signer Not digitally signed

I clicked on update driver and the hardware update wizard COMES up. I checked next to Install the software automatically (RECOMMENDED). It searches and comes up can not install hardware.
