Solve : Pictures not displaying in a received email?

I've received some pictures taken by a friend but all that I SEE is the black square and a little green square in the TOP left hand corner;if I RIGHT mouse click and click on 'show picture' nothing happens!!!

Sent to me via AOL and I'm using Gmail

Computer - RUNNING XP Home on Series 3

Any ideas - as I can see other pictures I've received as an attachment but the above was not as an attachment.
